Eco-friendly scheme launched to sell surplus building materials

BUILDING firms of all sizes can manage their material acquisitions, reduce waste and sell excess materials thanks to a new website.

Builder2Builder.co.uk allows registered users to place online classified adverts listing their surplus building materials, while buyers are able to search the classifieds for what they are looking to buy.

Builder2Builder works in much the same way as the newspaper classifieds. Materials are located by a material browse and town/location search pinpointing to within a five-mile radius of any main town/location specific materials required.

The website is the brainchild of Jack Birch, a builder of 35 years. Jack recognised that there are often surplus materials sitting on site nearing completion that would normally go as waste or to a yard after most jobs costing the builder extra in labour, transport and storage. Through his years of experience running his own business he also recognised that material waste could be reduced simply by understanding how estimators calculated material quantities in the first place, and subsequently correctly managing material acquisition and waste production.

Builder2Builder provides the solution to all these factors giving a greener way for builders to work together and turn their trash into cash.

Jack said: “Not managing your material purchases, waste production and selling your subsequent surplus material is profit going out of the window.

“The idea really came from having yards filled with surplus just sitting there and from having conversations with other people in the industry, realising they were the same and it occurred to me that someone out there most likely had material as surplus that I could use and visa versa but how to bring this availability and need together? Builder2Builder was the result.”

Builder2Builder users list anything small or large generated by residential and commercial construction that is of value and reusable. You’ll find everything from wood flooring and stained glass windows, to fill dirt, small quantities, large quantities, plant, materials and you can even advertise your business or trade

The Builder2Builder site also has these useful options:

Facility for all builders, construction companies, bricklayers, woodworkers, electricians or plumbers to advertise their availability for to the wider community of builders and the general public.
An option to market your plant and equipment.
Access to a Unique Project Resource Analyser
Jack added: “This is something I would use myself. Once a builder’s set up on there it becomes habit. If, say a month from completion, you notice there are materials left over you can put them straight on the website.

“The buyer even has the opportunity of collecting from site saving you the additional disposal, removal or storage costs, because it saves you having to organise a skip and the time it takes to clear it all up.”
