New energy clubs to help low-income families benefit from cheaper green power

Pioneering energy clubs are being created in and around Brixton, south London, to deliver cheap, green electricity to low-income households on pre-payment meters who struggle to afford their power bills. The learning from this project will be used to spread similar energy clubs across the UK, potentially helping hundreds of thousands of people.

A partnership of charities and energy experts will soon start searching for 60 vulnerable households to join the two new Energy Local clubs. Residents will join a club to receive cheaper power from solar panels if they use the power when the panels are operating. The solar panels are already installed on the Roupell Park Estate on Brixton Hill.

Period property heated perfectly by heat pump

A stunning period property in rural South Norfolk is now enjoying the benefits of renewable heating thanks to a ground source heat pump installation by Finn Geotherm.

The six bedroom farmhouse in Hingham was built in the 1700s and 1800s and underwent an extensive renovation in 2012. With original features such as large sash windows, heating the house was a challenge for homeowner Jon Daniels.

Changes to MCS guidelines - Top tips for ground source heat pump installers

In order to be eligible to claim for quarterly payments from the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme, ground source heat pump installations must be compliant with the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). The MCS is an independent scheme designed to evaluate heat pump systems and installers against robust criteria, providing greater protection for consumers.

At the end of October 2017 the MCS standard MIS3005 ‘Requirements for MCS Contractors undertaking the Supply, Design, Installation, Set to Work, Commissioning and Handover of Microgeneration Heat Pump Systems’ was updated.

The HVR Awards 2017 celebrate innovation in the building services sector. The awards recognise and reward companies across the country that demonstrate excellence in their field, outstanding technology or exceptional customer service and true innovation in the way they operate or in what they produce.
