How climate change is going to affect our environment

Most climatologists believe that human activities are now elevating the natural greenhouse effect by increasing concentrations of carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels and changes in land use.

Greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, act like a blanket, trapping heat in the earth’s atmosphere and therefore increasing the temperature. Observations of global average temperatures dating back to 1861 indicate a clear warming trend. In particular, since 1975, they show a sustained rise over the past three decades.

Like Canute, we cannot turn the tide

Following the autumn floods of 2000, the British Damage Management Association (BDMA) highlighted the Government’s emerging focus on flood prevention and identified what it termed the Canute Syndrome, insisting that attention must also be paid to dealing with the aftermath of floods.

The association pointed out that it would take many years to change the infrastructures that invite flooding and, no matter how good the preparation or defences, flooding would continue to occur for a variety of reasons; climate change, of course, is one of them.

Don’t gamble your life on this killer

Asbestos-related disease caused by past exposure to the fibrous mineral is currently responsible for up to 3,500 deaths a year, making it the country’s biggest work-related killer.

The current Control of Asbestos Regulations define how asbestos should be managed, and make it mandatory for only competent, trained and approved licensed contractors to remove asbestos as the killer substance is still present and still a threat.
